“Best friends never go out of style” Carrie Bradshaw
For many girls the first breath of spring brings up the excitement of upcoming prom and the necessity of a prom dress shopping. If you are one of these girls you were probably thinking about it since last year, looking for unique prom dress, shopping the store windows and pinning your favourite styles on your Pinterest board and Instagram.
Prom is a big deal and choosing your prom dress can be a challenging task for anybody! Prom is celebrating the entrance into adulthood, leaving childhood behind. It is only natural that an 18 year old girl wants to look more mature and not like a teenager. But more often girls opt for prom dresses that make them look too old for their age, more like bridesmaids. Remember, your prom dress should reflect your young bubbly personality, be young, be young and fun, suitable for an 18year old young lady, not a 35 year old woman.
What about wearing some great separates like an adorable embellished little top and playful skirt? Or a great sexy jumpsuit? Try to be original, break the rule! The possibilities are limited only by your imagination! We will be happy to consult you about styling and how to put a great look for your most important night together.
If you opt for buying your prom dress, shopping in Toronto can become a real nightmare especially if you don’t want to spend a small fortune on your dream dress. There are many stores offering inexpensive evening gowns that might work as a prom dress. But in most cases those are of a poor quality. Within couple of hours of wearing the beads or sequences start falling and lining comes apart while still on the wearer. We at 3rd floor tailors just very recently have been mending and re-sewing some freshly bought dresses that failed the quality test.
At the same time there are just handful retailers in Toronto offering relatively good value for your money – Bebe, Lemor, Anthropologie, even Laura – catering to a young girl’s need for a cocktail or a party dress. but since the majority of girls shop at those stores, chances are you might find another girl wearing the same dress as yours.
BCBG Max Azria can be a good place to shop for your unique prom dress if you have a bigger budget and are looking for a more mature, womanly look. The “Originals” on Queen Street West has probably the most eclectic and fun selection of prom dresses for girls who want to look “original” and fun. The only downside is the price tag which can be rather high for the quality.
Another option can be online shopping. You can go to some respected online retailers such as ASOS that offer good designs for less or try other international retailers. Most of them usually don’t ship to Canada. You have to find somebody in States or Europe to receive the shipment and send it to you. And then again, there is the fitting issue. What if after all that trouble the dress doesn’t fit? The alteration will be the solution. We will happily help you with all fitting issues.
We will still encourage you to try shopping at international online retailers. No chance to meet anybody in the same dress! Yoox and Net-a-Porter have great selections and you will find great pieces with comparable prices. Try Etsy and Ebay for great vintage pieces! You can find some fantastic second hand clothing that with a little bit of repair and refreshing will become absolutely unique. We would love to help you with that!
We at 3rd floor tailors also can offer you some beautiful one-of-a-kind dresses that will certainly make you stand out from the crowd and make you the best dressed girl at your prom night.
